Stefan Sagmeister
Stefan Sagmeister (1962-) is an Austrian born and New York-based graphic designer and typographer who was born in Bregenz, Austria. He studied graphic design at Universität für Angewandte Kunst (University of Applied Arts) in Vienna, Austria. He later received a Fulbright scholarship to study at the Pratt Institute in New York.
From 1991 to 1993 he worked at Leo Burnett’s Hong Kong Design Group in Hong Kong, after which he returned to New York to work with Tibor Kalman’s M&C design firm and then opened his own firm Sagmeister Inc., now called Sagmeister & Walsh Inc. He has designed for the Rolling Stones, HBO, the Guggenheim Museum and received a couple of Grammy Awards for his art directing and record design as well as for best recording package. J. L. Lobmeyr commissioned him to re-envision a glass designed by Adolf Loos in 1931, and he created the Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Heavenly Virtues Collection. In 2005, Sagmeister won the National Design Award for Communications from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. In 2013, he was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor of the Republic of Austria.
